Camping is a really fun, adventurous way to spend your time off and away from the burdens of work and day-to-day life. At the same time, it can turn into a scary and dangerous trip if the weather turns, an accident happens or if you are just not prepared in general. Here is a quick guide to help you prepare for the worst so that you can be safe on your next camping trip and enjoy your time out in nature.

Shelter
One of the first things you need to consider before you go camping is getting adequate shelter. Even if it is warm and you think you want to sleep out under the stars, it’s essential that you have a back-up plan in case it rains or the temperature drops dramatically. Your shelter also includes having a sleeping bag that is the right warmth for your camping conditions.

Food and Water
Having the right amount of food and water is essential to your enjoyment and survival. The types of food you should pack include non-perishable items like canned goods and freeze-dried emergency rations for when you are out hiking. You will also want high-calorie, easy-to-store foods like nuts, dried fruits, granola, protein bars and dried meats. Never leave the campsite without enough food in your pack to see you through a few days in the event that you get stuck away from the campsite. With water, be sure to pack plenty of water for each person on your trip. Emergency items to keep in you pack include a small water filter and water purification tablets for when you need to drink from a stream or pond.

First Aid
When you are out camping, chances are you will be far away from shops and hospitals. Because of this, you need to make sure you have a good first aid kit in case you have an accident while out camping. You can often buy a kit from a camping store which should include the following: bandages, antibiotic cream, painkillers, tweezers, gauze, antiseptic wipes, sunburn relief and bandage tape. Remember to also pack a surplus of any prescription medications you need.

Equipment
When you leave your campsite, it’s important that you always bring a backpack with not only first aid items, food and water, but also gear that will help you survive for a few days away from your tent and help you find your way back. Here are some of the items you will want to bring with you to ensure survival during uncertain times:
Rope
Waterproof matches
Lighters and other fire starters
Flares
Whistle
Compass
Swiss army knife
Flashlight
Water purification tablets
Snacks
Full water canteen
Folding saw or rigid blade knife

With the right amount of preparation and wilderness skills such as knowing how to build a fire, you should be able to handle any situation that comes your way when out on a camping trip. This way you’ll be able to have fun, relax and generally enjoy yourself instead of stressing out about accidents, bad weather or other problems that can happen while camping in the great outdoors.
